Testimonials

I compete in 1-2 marathons and numerous shorter distance races each year averaging 40-50 miles a week.   I do weekly interval training, a weekly long run, and attend weekly strengthening classes.  To avoid injury, I track my weekly workouts, my shoe mileage, and I complete my long runs on trails.  In spite of my diligence, I have been susceptible to injury to my Achilles, to my back, to my hamstrings, and mostly critically to my knees.  I am afraid these injuries will end my running. I know these injuries are caused by my inflexibility.

In hopes of improvement, I completed the BNB classes at Empowered Yoga.   This got me going.   I have progressed to attending two yoga classes a week.  The results have exceeded my wildest expectations. I found that the classes are not a walk in the park.   The classes kick butt! The challenge comes from within too so the mind gets trained as well.  The instructors ask us to mentally state our intention before each class.   My intention invariably is to not be a slacker, to stay focused if I have a chance to get this resistive body more limber. I found that I am more inflexible than I thought.   But the yoga attitude is always positive, that this gives me more room for improvement.

here are no prizes awarded, and the instructors stress that I am pitted against my own inflexibilities and nothing else.   I am amazed at how effective each yoga move is.  Empowered Yoga packages them all together to address every muscle and joint in my body. I am still a yoga rookie and probably always will be, but the results have been dramatic.  Knock on wood, but the tell-tale signs of pain have disappeared from my knees.   Instead of getting worse with time, I am slowly getting better as I am prudently able to increase weekly mileage and speed workouts.

Empowered Yoga classes are my secret for increased running longevity.   I have encouraged all my running friends to attend classes.   I can only speak as a runner, but I am confident that all athletes would benefit.

I would like to express my extreme gratitude and commend the staff at Wilmington Yoga for an amazing Brand New Beginner Course. I have been working with a personal trainer for the last 4 months and have seen more results during the 4 week BNB course than through all of my personal training! I am just beginning my personal journey and transformation through yoga and I look forward to the physical and spiritual growth that lies ahead. Yoga is such a challenge and I love it! Thank you for placing me on this wonderful path!

I was experiencing back pain and seeing an orthopedic doctor. The doctor concluded that the pain was all muscular and suggested yoga. I tired yoga at my gym and I liked it. I knew it was just an intro class so I decided to seek out more qualified instruction. Within my search I came across Wilmington Yoga. The instructors, the facility and the feeling were like nothing I had seen anywhere else. I immediately knew I had a home to get stronger and heal my back. I loved their philosophy and it immediately helped me soften my ambitious nature. The teachers really emphasize focusing on releasing any competition; this is exactly the environment I needed! The classes leave me with an energized feeling that is like nothing I have every experienced. I am calm yet I feel like I am radiating! Practicing at Wilmington Yoga has taught me to let the silly things go and focus on the important things in life. I feel clearer and more balanced! I am hooked for Life! Thanks Empowered Yoga!

It’s About the Feet….

When I went for my 60th annual check-up, the physician’s assistant asked me to touch my toes. When I leaned over and placed my palms on the floor without bending my knees, she looked amazed. Then she said, “You know you are really atypical for a woman your age!” (Yikes! ) My reply was…”I do yoga!”

Little did she realize that my real miracle is the healing of my feet. As a former runner, and retired teacher, I managed to develop acute plantar facitis in both my feet, including painfully sore heels. I just couldn’t get out of bed in the morning without pain. Around 1998, I was wearing orthotics, and going to physical therapy several times a week. I even endured wearing a cast on my right foot for three weeks to “give my foot a rest.” Surgery was looming around the corner.

I met Johnny in January, 2001, when he opened his studio. Then we were a very small class of beginning yoga students. I have been faithful to my practice over these four years, attending class at least twice a week.

Last month my husband and I were sitting on the beach in Bethany and he invited me to go for a walk. Without thinking I jumped up and walked down the beach…IN MY BARE FEET! After about 10 minutes, I stopped and realized that I had forgotten to put on my Tevas. I just couldn’t believe it! I can honestly say that that was the first time in eight years that I had been able to walk in bare feet on sand without pain.

I am no longer wearing my orthotics and whenever my feet start to feel tight, I start stretching! I believe that doing yoga has “fixed” my foot pain. I am truly grateful to Johnny and all my friends at Empowered Yoga.

Namaste,
Susan Ryan
